“Entertainment Weekly” Update
Entertainment Weekly have updated with another photo of Emma from their upcoming feature, as well as a short article. Emma discusses her drastic hair cut in more detail and describes a rather funny reaction from her dad:

My hairdresser was like, ‘When are you going to freak out?’ Most people cry or go into shock,’” she says. “But I was very calm. I knew it was the right thing.” It helped, she said, that she didn’t tell anyone she was getting the drastic ‘do. “I went to the salon alone and I left alone,” she says. “I knew everyone was going to have an opinion, and I couldn’t deal with it. I have to get myself into a good place to deal with people saying things like, ‘It’s terrible! She looks like a boy!’” Says the actress, laughing, “My dad already said that to me, actually. He said, ‘You’re not Audrey Hepburn yet, darling.’” source

She did it for herself and not for other people. Changes are needed. On the other hand, after so many years, when the stylist were straighting or waving her hair, hair need to have a rest and time for regeneration. Sometimes I’m wondering how she keeps hair in such good condition.

She has really good hair. And the best products + people :). It´s a shame all her beautiful hair is gone:(.

The other photos of her with short hair are good, but this photo is terrible, it makes her look like she’s 30 (not that there’s anything wrong with looking 30, except, well, she’s 20!).
She looks good with both long and short hair, though I personally hope she lets it grow out again. Maybe she can keep it straight and blonde for the rest of her life? XD

Hopefully she can keep her look youthful and feminine enough. I am getting used to it!

I fail to understand why people expect her to look “feminine.” Where does she say she wants to look “feminine” and only “feminine”? Anyway, hair does not define masculinity or femininity. Both male and female can do the exact same things with their hair, no more, less, or different, so what does that have to do with femininity? Okay, hair is symbolic of femininity, I get that… I don’t think it has anything to do with gender, but I did like her long hair more than this. However, as a female who cut my hair short when I was 14 after it was really long, I could come up with 20 reasons she might prefer short hair. Besides, people don’t have to stay the same forever, and I think it’s great that she’s experimenting in the face of what everyone will say.
People used to tell me I looked like a boy, but I didn’t care very much. The first year it was new and some people told me my hair was cool. After that, I started getting people telling me, “You should grow your hair out,” as if they had never seen me with long hair before!
Straight culture tends to expect people to look conventional: women are supposed to have long hair and men short hair. Gay men these days also deride femininity and expect men to have short hair, I guess (at least around here anyway, I never see men with long hair, but if they do, they are treated poorly by other men). Short hair is popular amongst queer women… since I am attracted to women, I fit in well and don’t care what straight people have to say about my hair… although now it is only super-short on one side, so I never get told anymore that I look like a boy.
You look like a boy if you have a beard, not short hair.
