You may recall our previous update stating that “Perks” had received an R-rating. Since then, Stephen Chobsky has appealed the MPAA to rescind this rating; the appeal was successful and “Perks” has now got a PG-13 rating according to TheWrap.com.

Originally, the Classification and Rating Administration assigned the movie, which stars Emma Watson and Paul Rudd, an R based on “teen drug and alcohol use, and some sexual references.” The appeals board switched that to PG-13 “for mature thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content including references, and a fight – all involving teens.”

And new news about Emma’s newest projects, “The Bling Ring”, has also come available. Emma herself posted a new message on her official website letting her fans know that she would be taking a semester off at Oxford to film the movie in Los Angeles before returning and completing her final semester abroad before returning to Brown University. Emma was spotted arriving in Los Angeles last night and filming is set to commence soon.

Hey Guys,
I’m just packing to go out to Los Angeles for “Bling Ring”.
I’m taking my 3rd term out of Worcester College to make sure I don’t compromise my studies or my part in the film.
I am so excited to have the opportunity to learn from Sofia and make what I think is a very important film. This is a bit of dream for me really.
So that’s my update!
I hope everyone is well.
Love Emma xx

OSCAR-WINNING FILMMAKER SOFIA COPPOLA CASTS EMMA WATSON
IN NEW FILM, “THE BLING RING”

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 29, 2012) – Sofia Coppola has cast Emma Watson (HARRY POTTER franchise) in her new film, THE BLING RING. Inspired by real events, the film follows a group of teenagers who take part in a string of celebrity burglaries. Watson will lead an ensemble cast.

THE BLING RING will begin shooting this spring in Los Angeles.

In addition to directing THE BLING RING from her screenplay, Coppola will produce the feature with Roman Coppola and Youree Henley. Executive producers for the picture are Fred Roos and Michael Zakin.

THE BLING RING shows a group of teenagers obsessed with fashion and fame who burglarized the homes of celebrities in Los Angeles. Tracking their targets’ whereabouts online, the teens would break-in and steal designer clothes and possessions. Reflecting on the naiveté of youth, amplified by today’s culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession, the members of the Bling Ring introduce us to temptations that nearly any teenager would find hard to resist. What starts out as youthful fun spins out of control and reveals a sobering view of our modern culture.

“I’m excited about the young cast we’re assembling and I’m looking forward to shooting on location here in Los Angeles,” says Coppola.

Sofia Coppola won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award for her film LOST IN TRANSLATION and was an Academy Award nominee for Best Director and Best Picture. Her latest film, SOMEWHERE, was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Emma Watson is best known for her role as Hermione in the HARRY POTTER films and will be seen this fall in THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. She just signed on to star in David Yates’ YOUR VOICE IN MY HEAD and Guillermo del Toro’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. She is represented by WME and Markham, Froggatt & Irwin.

Sofia Coppola has tapped Emma Watson to star in “The Bling Ring,” the true story of a group of teenagers who commit a string of celebrity burglaries.

Coppola will write and direct the pic, and will produce with brother Roman Coppola and Youree Henley. Executive producers are Fred Roos and Michael Zakin.

“I’m excited about the young cast we’re assembling and I’m looking forward to shooting on location here in Los Angeles,” Coppola said.

Though Watson has said she wants to dedicate more time to her studies, thesp has still found time for work, focusing more on small-budgeted projects post-”Harry Potter.” She was recently seen in The Weinstein Co.’s “My Week With Marilyn” and just wrapped production on Fox Searchlight’s “Perks of Being a Wallflower.” She’s also been tapped to star in David Yates’ “Your Voice in My Head” for Warner Bros.

Coppola has made a habit of giving rising female stars material that’s allowed them to break into more adult, such as Scarlett Johansson in “Lost in Translation” and, more recently, Elle Fanning in Coppola’ss last pic, “Somewhere.”

Watson is repped by WME and Markham, Froggatt & Irwin.

“Perks” gets an R-rating

Hypable.com are reporting that Emma’s upcoming project, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, has been given an R-rating by the MPAA for “teen drug and alcohol use, and some sexual references” according to RopeOfSilicion.com. According to the source, Summit will be appealing the rating as it has the potential to alienate their intended target audience. “Perks” still has no release date and probably won’t until the rating is finalised.

The popular book Perks of Being A Wallflower was adapted for film last year and is due to be released sometime in 2012 by Summit.

But now there’s been a roadbump: The film received a ‘R’ rating from the United States’ MPAA, which alienates many of the potential moviegoers who’ve read the book. So Summit intends to appeal the decision.

[...] Larry Richman, a well-sourced movie writer, says the film’s director Stephen Chbosky has intended all along for the film to be rated PG-13.

Rumoured Project Update: Emma (officially) attached to “Beauty”

Late last July rumours were flooding the movie production sites about Emma’s involvement with Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming project, “Beauty”. Variety.com have updated the rumour and noted that Emma is “in final negotiations to topline the period pic”. The movie will be distributed by Warner Bros. and scripted by Andrew Davies.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the tale will be loosely based on the book “Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast” by Robin McKinley.

View our original article (dated 17 July 2011) for more information.

Edit: Wow, this is getting confusing again. Emma-Watson.net have added a little note to their update about this production with a note from author Robin McKinley.

According to Robin McKinley, she knows nothing about all this, other than Warner’s did option her novel in the past. She thinks it unlikely the movie will be made, and if it is, that it will have nothing in common with her novel beyond the Beauty/Beast premise. Perhaps it will be a loose adaption of just the title. Emma would play “a young woman who attempts suicide before being saved by a New York-based psychiatrist who’s dying of cancer”.

Collider.com added that, along with Emma as the female lead, George Clooney and Tom Hanks are currently in negotiations for the psychiatrist role.

Warner Bros is negotiating to acquire Your Voice in My Head, the Emma Forrest-scripted drama based on the scribe’s memoir that is expected to be the next film by director David Yates. The film is shaping up to be a Harry Potter reunion. Further completing the Harry Potter reunion on Your Voice in My Head is the fact that Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire the film. As for the male lead in the project, Deadline reports that the studio is aiming for a big name as Tom Hanks and George Clooney are apparently in the mix. Personally, I’m ecstatic to see Yates take on such delicate dramatic material. I felt he capped the Harry Potter franchise off perfectly with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, and I’m incredibly excited to see where he takes his career next. via Collider.com
