Emma on Her Role As Hermione

“One of the things I really wanted Helena to get across is how awkward the whole experience is for Hermione. She is very uncomfortable because, for one thing, Hermione is somewhat prudish and Bellatrix is wild and goes around in a leather corset. And Bellatrix is evil and arrogant while Hermione is a good person, so being mean and demanding to everyone doesn’t come naturally to her at all.”
“You see her face dissolved from all their photographs. You see the sacrifice that she makes in order to go on this journey with Harry. Essentially, she chooses her friend over her family.”
“It’s such an emotionally heavy film so it is sometimes nice to have a break from that and do something more physical. There is a giant snake involved, we get picked up on a dragon, dropped in a lake and I nearly get my throat slit. It’s real adventure.”
“There’s a lot more to do with the relationship between Hermione and Ron. Hermione got very serious in the last couple of films so it was really nice to get to do some funny bits with Rupert and he’s great at that. Hermione’s the ones who does all the thinking and planning. Sometimes I look at her and think, I can’t believe she doesn’t just collapse … You must be so bored of hearing us say, “They’re getting darker,” but it is going that way!”

Movie Trivia

• When David Heyman was asked if there was any actors he wished to see in the series but never was, he answered Eileen Atkins, Ian McKellen, Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Craig, James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff. He now wished to work with them in future projects. Daniel Radcliffe would have loved to see Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Stephen Fry (the narrator of the UK Harry Potter audio-books.)

• This film, along with Part I, are the only Harry Potter films to be released in 3D in cinemas in their entirety (only select scenes were available for Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince and only in IMAX).

• Not long after Alan Rickman started to play Severus Snape, J.K. Rowling told him some character secrets about Snape that would not be otherwise revealed until the last book. Most significantly, Rickman was one of the very few people other than Rowling to know (years ahead of the last book’s publication) that Snape had been in love with Lily Evans (later Potter) when they were students at Hogwarts, and both Snape’s protection of and antagonism toward Harry came from that. Rowling said that she shared this information with Rickman because “he needed to understand, I think, and does completely understand and did completely understand where this bitterness towards this boy, who’s living proof of [Lily's] preference for another man, came from.”

• The script was originally written, like the book, to include Draco Malfoy’s bully friends, Crabbe and Goyle. As in the book, Crabbe was to be killed in a climactic battle. Jamie Waylett’s arrest and conviction on drug charges, however, forced the filmmakers to change this plan. Crabbe was written out of the script, with Goyle being killed in his place.

• There was debate regarding the Trio’s transformation into Death Eaters. It was settled that rather than have Emma, Daniel and Rupert don heavy make-up and special effects that their roles would temporarily be played by the adult actors themselves. Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays Bellatrix Lestrange, had a ball playing Hermione.

• The last scene filmed for this movie was the epilogue.

• When thinking about how to film the epilogue, the producers threw around various ideas including: re-casting the characters with adult characters or writing the scene out. However, after the release of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and the special effects used to age Brad Pitt, the producers decided to keep the original cast and give them “the Benjamin Button treatment”.

• Emma Watson was informed by Rowling who she would have to kiss in the final movie. Emma responded by laughing when it was revealed that she would have to kiss both her co-stars!

• As a memento cast members were given props as gifts. Emma chose to take Hermione’s wand, cloak and Time Turner from “Prisoner of Azkaban”.

• Primary filming for the movie finished in June 2010 with the epilogue. However, specific epilogue scenes were reshot and Emma had to wear a wig (due to her cutting off her hair in August).

• The last of eight movies based on the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling.
