- Named after Hermione from William Shakespeare’s play ‘A Winter’s Tale’.
- Rowling thought it would be rational to have two professional dentists show their cleverness and erudition through giving their only child an unusual and unforgettable name.
- Although in ‘Order of the Phoenix’ Hermione’s middle name is listed as “Jane”, Rowling changed the main female protagonist’s middle name into “Jean”.
- The surname ‘Granger’ is an old English name, its definition being: “a grange is a barn or a farm with buildings to store grain, so ‘Granger’ is an occupational name for a farm bailiff.”

Parents: Unnamed Muggle dentists; in ‘Deathly Hallows’ Hermione casts erases their memories and relocates them to Australia under the pseudonyms of Wendell and Monica Wilkins, in a bid to protect them from the Death Eaters and Voldemort.

Siblings: In canon, Hermione is an only child. However, Rowling admitted that during the writing process, Hermione was given a younger sister – she was eventually cut from the original storyline, and Hermione made the only Granger child in the series.

Family Life: The Grangers are a typical British Muggle household comprised of two dentist parents and a uniquely named only daughter. While Hermione is the only magical person in their family, her parents are quite proud and accepting of their daughter’s magical powers, but they do not approve of using magic for quick fixes, instead suggesting practical, Muggle ways of altering appearances – especially Hermione’s dental structure! Hermione’s parents also go to Diagon Alley with their daughter before the school year resumes, immersing themselves in as much magical culture as they can.
