Biography: The Overview

Unmatched mentally throughout the series, except by the late greats Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort, Hermione is shown throughout the series as a resourceful, principled and brilliant character, commonly referred to as the brightest witch of her age. She is, along with Ron Weasley, one of Harry Potter’s (the Boy Who Lived) best and closest friends. She has been and fought alongside the pair since her early years at Hogwarts, playing a vital role in Harry’s development as a character, as a person and helping all those around her; most importantly, she is one of the main reasons that Harry and Ron survived those turbulent seven years at Hogwarts!

An avid reader, Hermione prefers concrete, tangible subjects such as runes, Arithmancy and history to indefinite, unpredictable subjects such as Divination. Her first couple of months at Hogwarts were hindered by insecurity and unsureness and she indulged in safe practices such as book-learning and following the rules; through the course of the series, Hermione become more confident in her magical and personal abilities and more comfortable in the Wizarding world.

Housing a brilliant mind, Hermione is said to have memorised numerous spells and enchantments into her mind and can reasonably and logically approach unbeatable situations which would stump her peers and cohorts. She masters magic at quite a young age and is anxious to learn more; by her fifth year she was practicing N.E.W.T. level magic successfully, effectively casting difficult spells, such as Protean charms and Patronuses; she is also quick on her feet, helping Harry out at Quidditch matches by conjuring portable, waterproof fires and making his glasses waterproof, scratch-proof and fog-proof. Her curiosity into learning and magic is heightened in her third year where she undertakes all the classes offered an impossible task for any other student – she is given the responsibility of a Time Turner to be in two places at once, but found this practice too exhausting to keep up, and dropped to maximum subjects in her fourth year. While she is superbly brilliant, she is also exceedingly kind and humble, often shown helping out fellow class members, especially Neville Longbottom, in various classes and subjects.

She is an inspiration to all girls, showing that books and brains can forage a healthy and loved personality; the first couple of years at Hogwarts are littered with books, homework and studying and it isn’t until her fourth year that she is romantically attached to another character. Asked to the Yule Ball by “Bulgarian bon-bon” Viktor Krum, Hermione appears at the Ball almost completely changed from her bushy haired, somewhat frazzled bookworm exterior, boasting sleek hair, a gorgeous blue dress and a young sporting legend as her date by her side. Her fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh year are subsequently made slightly more turbulent as she and her flame-haired love interest, Ron Weasley, continue to spar and argue throughout the course of the series.

A bonafide humanitarian, Hermione takes excessive interest in the oppressed classes and creatures of wizarding society, especially in the plight of the house elves – she starts in her fourth year the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.), a group dedicated to achieving humane and just rights for enslaved house elves. She also takes a keen interest in Buckbeak’s trial during her third year, preparing for hours for his trial and deposition. She buys her beloved pet, Crookshanks, solely on the fact that she is told that no one else wanted him.

Possessing a thorough and deep understand of research and acquiring knowledge, a large part of the Horcrux hunt’s success is owed to Hermione. Not only did she provide the provisions necessary for them to survive away from society (a tent, reference books, clothes, sleeping bags, medicines and potions, Harry’s Cloak of Invisibility), but she also led the force on acquiring details on how to destroy Horcruxes and their host. She planned ahead not only for herself and her friends, but also for her parents, modifying their memories and relocating them to Australia, under forged pseudonyms.

Following the war, she defied her friend’s intentions and went back to Hogwarts to reclaim the year she lost, unlike her close friends Harry, Neville and Ron who each joined Shacklebolt’s Ministry to rebuild the wizarding world after a turbulent and bitter war. During a climactic and fevering battle at their old school grounds, Ron and Hermione share their first kiss, sparking the beginning of a long and (assumedly) co-operative relationship. It was following Voldemort’s defeat that she and Ron finally initiated a relationship between them, which grew into marriage and a happy family, as the pair had two children, Rose and Hugo Weasley, both of which are set to attend Hogwarts with their Potter cousins.
